One day we decided to take the family and go for a drive. We'd just bought an old Holden Kingswood stationwagon (an aussie icon). Thinking we would do the waterfall circuit we set off in the early morning sun.
Millaa Millaa falls was absolutely beautiful, cool water falling over rocks to an amazing pool below, surrounded by rainforest. Very impressive. Then onto Ellinja, again impressive but a long hike through the rainforest. We thought we'd go off the beaten track and go to Pepita and Souitta falls. Can't remember which one it was but it was down a farm track. We had to park the car at the side of the road next to a river and a bridge and then walk for a while. Nobody around for miles. Its always lovely and cool in the rainforests and the sounds are amazing - whip birds, I always thought it was one call but apparently its two birds, one answering the other. Occassionally scrub turkeys would rush past, sending us all into a panic, when we heard the first cracking sounds of something coming out of the trees - could it be a cassowary, we stood still, hoisting a kid onto Miks shoulders, holding a large branch over our heads. Cassorwaries won't attack anything taller than themselves or so they say. Hunger pangs and lunchtime sent us back to the car. Oh dear, we had sunk into mud. While the kids sat on the bridge playing pooh sticks we tried to fathom out how to get the car out. Driving out wasn't an option - we'd tried that, only getting ourselves deeper in the mud and nearer to the river when we went into reverse by mistake. Then along came two walkers - foreign tourists with white white new trainers on. They didn't really want to help us out and to be quite honest they didn't really try very hard. I think the two little boys on the bridge crying "we want to go home" shamed them. In the end they walked to a farm and got the farmer to come tow us out with the tractor. It was nearly dark by the time we got home and everyone was starting to get worried. But it was just another adventure for us. We left the rest of the waterfall circuit for another day and another adventure.
